1. A Festival Island Embraced by the Bukhangang: Jara Island & Jara Island Campground, Ihwawon

Sitting in the middle of the Bukhangang right next to Nami Island, Jara Island is Gapyeong's finest eco-leisure park, made up of four islets: Dongdo, Seodo, Jungdo and Namdo. Unlike Nami Island, which you must reach by boat, it's connected by bridges, so you can get in comfortably on foot or by car at any time, and in spring and autumn the 'Namdo Flower Garden' becomes a spectacle with endless fields of poppies, cornflowers, zinnias and Korean daisies (gujeolcho).

Jara Island Campground on Seodo has some of Korea's best caravan and auto-camping sites, so even beginners without camping gear can enjoy the romance of riverside camping. Stop by 'Jara Island Ihwawon,' the greenhouse botanical garden at the entrance to Seodo, to breathe in the scent of coffee and yuja (citron) trees, and on your way out, visit the tranquil Gapyeong Hyanggyo Confucian School in Gapyeong-eup for a well-filled outing.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip The Namdo Flower Garden on Jara Island is quite a distance from the entrance (Jungdo parking lot), so bring a stroller or comfortable sneakers, or use the island's electric carts for convenience.

2. Where the Sound of Gyeongban Valley and the Scent of Korean Pines Linger: Kalbongsan Natural Recreation Forest

If you prefer the deep green of a mountain valley and cool valley breezes to wide-open riverside scenery, head into Kalbongsan Natural Recreation Forest in Gyeongban-ri, Gapyeong-eup. Log forest cabins and the Forest Culture Lodge sit along the pristine Gyeongban Valley, free of any pollution, so when you open the window, the sounds of the stream and birdsong pour in in stereo.

The gentle trails and Korean pine forest paths behind the recreation forest are so shady that they stay cool even in midsummer. Along with quiet forest healing, thrilling leisure-sports facilities that cross above the forest are close by, making it an ideal four-season healing base with family or friends.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Cabin reservations for Kalbongsan Natural Recreation Forest are made through the Sumnadeul-e integrated reservation system, and you can visit for a daytime forest-bathing walk even without staying overnight.

3. The Little Geumgang of Gyeonggi, Piercing the Clouds: Hyeondeungsan (Unaksan)

Towering over Jojong-myeon, Gapyeong, Hyeondeungsan (Unaksan, 935.5 m above sea level) is a famous mountain long called the 'Little Geumgang of Gyeonggi' and counted among Gyeonggi Province's five great rocky mountains, because its sharp rock peaks piercing the clouds closely resemble Geumgangsan. Especially in autumn, red foliage blazes between its white granite peaks, drawing hikers from all over the country.

Even beginners daunted by the rocky-ridge route to the summit needn't worry. Just a round trip along the valley path from the ticket booth past Muu Falls and Baengnyeon (Hundred-Year) Falls to 'Hyeondeungsa,' a thousand-year-old temple, and on to the Unaksan Suspension Bridge section with its dizzying views, lets you fully enjoy Unaksan's outstanding valley beauty and rocky scenery.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Rather than a summit hike, we recommend the 'Hyeondeungsa + Unaksan Suspension Bridge' course as a light trekking course.
