1. The East Sea, All About Waves and Pine Forest Trails: Gangneung vs. Sokcho
They share the same east coast, but Gangneung and Sokcho move at distinctly different rhythms. Gangneung spreads out wide, with gentle pine forest trails running from Gyeongpo Beach to Gangmun and Anmok and a walking path around Gyeongpo Lake, making it ideal for slow walks to the sound of the waves and an unhurried cup of coffee. You can reach the beach area quickly from KTX Gangneung Station, and add the charm of the seaside railway by heading south to Jeongdongjin Station and Sandglass Park.
Sokcho, by contrast, is compact, and its biggest strength is that you can enjoy both the sea and Seoraksan National Park in a single day. Ride the Seoraksan Cable Car up to Gwongeumseong Fortress in the morning to take in Ulsanbawi Rock and the East Sea horizon, then stroll Sokcho Beach and the Yeongnangho and Cheongchoho lagoons in the afternoon for a packed 'mountain + sea' route.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Gangneung's beaches are spread far apart, so give the Gyeongpo–Gangmun area and the Jeongdongjin area a day each. In Sokcho, the bus terminal, Sokcho Port and the Seoraksan entrance are close together, which saves a lot of travel time.
2. The Southern Coast From Above the Archipelago and the Night Sea: Yeosu vs. Mokpo
If a sea with nothing but horizon feels monotonous, Yeosu and Mokpo, where islands, bridges and harbors unfold layer upon layer, are a great alternative. In Yeosu the key sights cluster along the water: starting from Odongdo Island near Yeosu Expo Station, there's the Yeosu Maritime Cable Car linking Dolsan Bridge and Jasan Park, plus Yi Sun-sin Square and Jinnamgwan Hall. After sunset, when Dolsan Bridge and Geobukseon Bridge light up, a romantic night-sea promenade appears that feels nothing like the daytime.
In Mokpo, the highlight is the Mokpo Marine Cable Car, which spans a total of 3.23 km from Bukhang Port over the Yudalsan ridge to Gohado Island. From the cabin you can take in Yudalsan's rock formations and the southwestern sunset beyond Mokpo Bridge in a single view, and back on the ground you can walk the old downtown streets, where buildings from the port-opening era are preserved, and the century-old Korombang Bakery.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Island routes reached by boat, like the Bireong-gil Trail on Geumodo Island in Yeosu, depend on the weather and ferry departure times, so rather than doing them as a day trip, it's safer to fit them into a stay of one night or more and check the morning sailings first.
3. The All-Rounder for Sea, Food and Old-Town Culture in One Trip: Busan
If your companions all have different tastes, or you want to hop between several beaches by public transit without a car, Busan is the least likely to disappoint. Greet the morning sea at Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, perched on the cliffs of the Gijang coast, spend midday on the waterfront café streets of Haeundae and Gwangalli, and in the afternoon visit Gamcheon Culture Village, with its pastel stairways and alleys, and the Busan Modern & Contemporary History Museum Annex, all smoothly linked by metro and bus.
Lodging options are just as broad, from good-value hotels in the old downtown (Jung-gu and Nampo) to ocean-view stays in Haeundae and Gwangalli, so the city flexibly handles anything from a 2-day, 1-night weekend trip to a workation of 3 nights or more.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Busan's coastline stretches a long way from east to west, so split it into two zones and match your lodging and route to each: for example, 'Gijang, Haeundae and Gwangalli (East Busan)' on day one and 'Busan Station, Nampo, Gamcheon Culture Village and Yeongdo (old downtown)' on day two.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Q. If I want a car-free day trip to the sea by train, which city is easiest?
From Seoul, Gangneung (Gangneung Station), as little as 1 hour 49 minutes away by KTX, is the least demanding. Yeosu (Yeosu Expo Station), where you can walk straight from the station to the sea, the Expo site and Odongdo Island, and Busan (Busan Station), with its dense metro network, are especially good for a 2-day, 1-night trip on foot.
Q. Which sea cable car is longer and has more varied scenery, Yeosu's or Mokpo's?
In route length, the Mokpo Marine Cable Car (3.23 km) is the longest and most dynamic, passing over mountain (Yudalsan), sea and island (Gohado). The Yeosu Maritime Cable Car, on its stretch linking Dolsan Park and Jasan Park, excels in night views of the bridges over the sea and views of Odongdo Island.
Q. Which seaside destination do you recommend for a 3-generation family trip with parents and kids?
We recommend Sokcho, where routes are short and the Seoraksan Cable Car lets you see stunning scenery without effort, or Gangneung, which is well equipped with an arboretum (Solhyang Arboretum), flat lakeside walking paths (Gyeongpo Lake) and sundubu (soft tofu) dining.
