1. A Landscape Painting on the Water That Captivated Jeong Do-jeon and Toegye Yi Hwang: Dodamsambong & Gudambong, Oksunbong

Dodamsambong, the first of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, is the face of Danyang: three striking rocks, with Janggunbong (Husband Peak) at the center flanked by Cheopbong (Concubine Peak) and Cheobong (Wife Peak), rise proudly from the middle of the leisurely flowing Namhangang. The riverside trail and photo zones are well kept on flat ground, so you can face a scene like an Eastern ink painting the moment you step out of the car, and touring the Seongmun (Stone Gate) right next to the peaks doubles the impression.

To truly savor Danyang's river scenery, head south and take a cruise from Janghoe Ferry Terminal to look up at Gudambong and Oksunbong from the water. The rugged cliffs that Toegye Yi Hwang lavishly praised while serving as magistrate of Danyang spread like a folding screen over the blue waters of Chungjuho Lake (Cheongpungho Lake), making this the course parents marvel at most.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Dodamsambong is most mystical when the morning mist rises off the water, and if you climb the stairs on the left side of the riverbank from the parking lot, you can also see 'Seongmun,' a natural rock arch.

2. Walking on the Cliff and Looking Down from the Sky: Danyanggang Jando Trail & Mancheonha Skywalk

Starting under Sangjin Bridge (Sangjin Railway Bridge) and running along the rock walls of the Namhangang to the Mancheonha Skywalk ticket office, the 1.2 km 'Danyanggang Jando Trail' is the highlight of walking trips in Danyang. A safe deck path has been laid halfway up vertical cliffs that were once impossible even to approach, so you can walk on the flat with no stairs to tire you, looking down at the river flowing beneath your feet.

At Mancheonha Skywalk, which connects directly from the end of the walkway, you ride a monorail or eco-friendly shuttle bus up to the summit observatory on Manhakcheonbong. Follow the spiral ramp to the top, look down through the transparent tempered-glass floor at the dizzying bends of the Namhangang and the peaks of Sobaeksan, and you'll feel completely liberated.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip The most efficient route is to park at one of the Mancheonha Skywalk parking lots (such as Parking Lot 3), see the Skywalk first, then come down and walk part of the Danyanggang Jando Trail and back.

3. A Journey Through Hundreds of Millions of Years to an Underground Palace: Gosu Cave, Danyang

Gosu Cave in Danyang (Natural Monument No. 256) is one of the finest limestone caves in Asia, formed in Paleozoic limestone layers. The moment you step inside, cool air of 14–15°C year-round wraps around you, making you forget the season outside.

Huge clusters of stalactites that seem to pour from the ceiling, along with the Virgin Mary statue, Lion Rock, Eagle Rock and aragonite (anthodite) crystals sparkling like jewels, are softly lit to create a spectacle like an underground palace. If you want deeper forest healing after the cave, take a walk on the forest trails of Jungnyeong Pass or Darian Valley in Sobaeksan National Park (northern section).

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Inside Gosu Cave, the steel stairs can be slippery from the humidity, and there are quite a few stairs in the later section connecting Courses A and B, so be sure to wear sneakers (those with less stamina can use the exit after Course A).

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q. Is the Danyanggang Jando Trail scary for people with a fear of heights or for older travelers?

Most of the floor is solid wooden decking, high safety railings are installed (only some sections have mesh floors), and it's a flat path with almost no slope, so older travelers and kids walk it comfortably.

Q. At Mancheonha Skywalk, should you take the monorail or the shuttle bus?

The monorail is good for enjoying the scenery as it climbs slowly, but weekend waits can be long; the electric shuttle bus turns over quickly, so it's the practical choice, taking you up to just below the summit observatory without waiting.

Q. Can you see Dodamsambong, Gosu Cave, the Danyanggang Jando Trail and Mancheonha Skywalk all in one day?

Yes. All four are clustered around downtown Danyang, so you can combine them into a day-trip or 2-day, 1-night route: Dodamsambong and Gosu Cave in the morning, then Mancheonha Skywalk and the Danyanggang Jando Trail in the afternoon after lunch.
