1. Leaning on Muryangsujeon's Entasis Columns to Watch the Waves of Sobaeksan: Buseoksa Temple

Considered the pinnacle of Korean architectural aesthetics, Buseoksa Temple in Yeongju is designed so that your view widens step by step as you climb nine tiers of stone-terrace stairs, from Iljumun Gate past Cheonwangmun Gate, the Bell Pavilion and Anyangnu Pavilion up to Muryangsujeon Hall. After climbing all the steep steps and passing beneath Anyangnu, the moment you turn around in the courtyard in front of Muryangsujeon, you can't help but gasp.

That's because layer upon layer of peaks of Sobaeksan and the Taebaek Mountains spread out beneath your feet like the waves of a vast sea. Stand stroking the gently swelling entasis columns and unpainted wood grain of Muryangsujeon, one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings, and a thousand years suddenly feel like the present.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Visit Buseoksa around 4 to 5:30 p.m., when the sun begins to sink behind the Sobaeksan ridges to the west, and you can enjoy layered mountain silhouettes tinted by the golden sunset.

2. The Breath of Seonbi Scholars Among the Red Pines: Sosu Seowon, Seonbichon and Seonbi World

Sosu Seowon, Joseon's first royally chartered Confucian academy (saaek seowon), shows its overwhelming grace from the moment you pass the ticket booth and face the forest of red pines hundreds of years old (Hakjasurim, the Scholar Tree Forest). The clear sound of the Jukgyecheon Stream flowing beside the academy and the view of the Chwihandae pavilion, where Toegye Yi Hwang recited poetry with his disciples, form a landscape painting in themselves.

At Seonbichon, connected right next to Sosu Seowon, you can stroll among the historic head-family houses and thatched-roof homes of the Yeongju area, and across the road at the K-Culture Theme Park Seonbi World you can enjoy six traditional cultures—hanbok, hansik (Korean food), hanok, hanji (traditional paper), Hangeul and Korean music—through cutting-edge media art and hands-on experiences, so no generation has time to get bored.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Buying the combined ticket for Sosu Seowon, Seonbichon and Seonbi World is much more economical than buying separate tickets.

3. A Thrilling Walk on a Single-Log Bridge over Silver Sandbanks: Museom Village

Museom Village in Munsu-myeon, southern Yeongju (Sudo-ri, meaning 'an island floating on water'), is a river-bend village where the clear waters of the Naeseongcheon Stream wrap around three sides of the village and create fine, silvery sandy beaches. The narrow single-log bridge, 150 m long and 30 cm wide, which was once the only passage linking the village to the world across the river, still lies over the water in its original form.

Crossing the single-log bridge step by step while watching the blue sky and your own shadow reflected in the clear, shallow water leaves you with the most unforgettable photos of your Yeongju trip. After crossing, take a slow walk through the alleys of dignified traditional houses such as Haeudang House and Manjukjae House.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Short passing bays are set at intervals along the single-log bridge so you can make way for people coming the other way; don't hurry, yield to others, and you'll cross safely.
