1. The Best Scenery Without Straining the Knees: Sokcho's Seoraksan and Yeosu's Odongdo

When traveling with parents, the biggest concerns are uphill stairs and walking distance. At Seoraksan National Park in Sokcho, the cable car whisks you up in one go to just below Gwongeumseong at 700 m above sea level so you can show them the rocky cliffs of Oeseorak, and after coming down, it's a nice idea to stroll the flat pine forest path to Sinheungsa and have a meal of warm sundubu (soft tofu) and grilled hwangtae at Daecheongmaru.

Yeosu is another city parents are very happy with. You can ride the Camellia Train comfortably along the breakwater into Odongdo, and after crossing the Dadohae sea on the Yeosu Maritime Cable Car, you can treat them in the evening to a restorative meal of hamo shabu-shabu (pike conger), good for recovering energy, at Geobukseon Hoetjip.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip When looking for restaurants with your parents, check in advance whether they have Western-style table seating, which is easier on the knees than sitting on the floor, and mealtimes will be much more comfortable.

2. Serene UNESCO Mountain Temples and Confucian Academies Plus Hot Springs and Hanwoo: Yeongju and Haenam

For parents who prefer classic traditional heritage and nature to crowded commercial tourist spots, Yeongju in North Gyeongsang Province and Haenam in South Jeolla Province are the best gift. Hakjasurim (Scholar Tree Forest) at Yeongju's Sosu Seowon and Seonbichon are linked by flat dirt paths that are easy to walk, and after tasting tender grade 1 Yeongju Hanwoo at Chuksan Main Branch Butcher Restaurant or Yeongju Cheongjeong Hanwoo Butcher Restaurant, you can soak away the fatigue at the Yeongju Hot Spring Tourist Hotel.

Haenam, too, is well equipped with the flat thousand-year-old forest path to Daeheungsa on Duryunsan, the Historic Site of Gosan Yun Seon-do (Nogudang), and the Ttangkkeut Observatory reached by monorail, showing the textbook form of a relaxed Namdo trip with parents.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip Stop by Yeongju's Punggi Ginseng Market to buy fresh ginseng, red ginseng slices, or crispy fried ginseng for your parents' health, and the good memories will carry on well after the trip.

3. Rediscovering Classic Destinations Full of Memories: Gyeongju and Danyang

Gyeongju and Danyang, which hold memories of their younger years for your parents' generation, have become even more comfortable destinations for a trip with parents thanks to refined walking infrastructure. In Gyeongju, Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, and Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond are connected by flat lawn walking paths, and the traditional teahouses near Hwangnidan-gil (Gyeongju Dabang, Gabong Bangwa, etc.) are lovely for sharing handmade hangwa (traditional sweets) and tea.

In Danyang, thanks to Dodamsambong right by the parking lot, the Danyanggang Jando Trail with its flat walk above the river, and Mancheonha Skywalk, where a dedicated shuttle bus takes you up to the entrance at the top, you can enjoy the essence of Danyang's Eight Scenic Views without much walking.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip The most important thing when planning a trip with parents is to loosely schedule only 2–3 major sights a day and to build in a rest around 3–4 p.m. at a teahouse with a nice view or by checking in to your lodging.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q. If my parents get carsick, which destination is best when departing from the Seoul area?

Danyang Station (Danyang) and Yeongju Station (Yeongju, 1 hour 45 minutes on average), reached without changing trains by KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni Station, or Gyeongju Station, reached directly by KTX from Seoul Station, are the most comfortable options, with no long-distance road congestion.

Q. Is a hanok stay or a regular hotel better for staying with parents?

If they are used to sleeping in beds and value bathroom convenience, we recommend hot spring or city hotels (Yeongju Hot Spring Tourist Hotel, Bukdanyang Resort, etc.); if they prefer the charm of a courtyard and a warm ondol room, we recommend a modern hanok stay furnished with beds.

Q. What alternative routes can I take with my parents when it's rainy or windy?

Add one indoor backup such as Danyang's Gosu Cave or Danuri Aquarium, the Gyeongju National Museum, or Yeongju's Seonbi World or Ginseng Museum, and you won't be caught off guard even if the weather changes.
