1. 100-Year-Old Modern Alleys and Korombang Bakery, a Walk from Mokpo Station

Step out of the KTX Mokpo Station gates and the old downtown alleys, layered with time since the port opened in 1897, begin right away. Stroll slowly past the Ogeori Culture Center, housed in the former Mokpo branch of Higashi Honganji temple, Mokpo Jeonggwang Jeonghyewon, which retains Japanese-style temple and garden features, and Modern History Museum Buildings 1 and 2.

At the start of the alley walk sits Korombang Bakery, counted among Korea's five great bakeries. Take away a cream cheese baguette that is crisp outside and soft inside and a savory shrimp baguette, or enjoy them with coffee in the 2nd-floor cafe space for a sweet first impression of Mokpo.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip If you want to feel the quiet charm of the old downtown alleys by day and by night, staying in old-downtown lodging such as Guesthouse Oraetteul or Ri-in Mokpo Guesthouse is a good option.

2. Over Mountain, Sea, and Island in One Ride: The Mokpo Marine Cable Car and Yudalsan

In the afternoon, head to Mokpo's landmarks, Yudalsan and the Mokpo Marine Cable Car. Departing from Bukhang Station, the cable car glides breathtakingly over Yudalsan's rocky ridges, then passes a huge 155 m main tower and crosses the sea to Gohado, revealing an overwhelming panorama over a total of 3.23 km.

When you get off at Gohado Station, climb the observatory for views of Yudalsan and Mokpo Port, and be sure to walk the 'Gohado Marine Deck' that stretches along the seaside cliffs beneath the black pine forest. On the way back, hop off briefly at Yudalsan Station to take in the views of Nojeokbong Peak and Madangbawi as well, killing two birds with one stone.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip The most beautiful timing is to board the cable car around 4 p.m., walk the Gohado Marine Deck, and watch the sunset over Mokpo Bridge from the cabin on your way back at dusk.

3. Mokpo Bridge Glowing Red at Sunset and Southern Port Cuisine

The finest scene to cap an evening in Mokpo is the sunset at Mokpo Bridge, which links Bukhang and Gohado. Beyond the elegant cable-stayed bridge shaped like the wings of two soaring cranes, the red sun of the southwest sea slowly sinks, turning the sea and sky golden.

After the sunset, round off a full day with authentic Namdo seafood such as sebal nakji tangtangi (chopped live small octopus), mineo (croaker) sashimi, and blue crab bibimbap at tidy Korean set-meal restaurants in downtown Mokpo such as Tteulchae, or at the fish market and the street-stall pub alley.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip If you want to add a trip to the Dadohae islands (Oedaldo, Hongdo, Heuksando, etc.), you can check ferry timetables at the Mokpo Coastal Passenger Terminal below Yudalsan.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q. Is it better to board the Mokpo Marine Cable Car at Bukhang Station or at Gohado Station?

If you are coming by public transportation or from Mokpo Station or Yudalsan, Bukhang Station near downtown is the most convenient; if you are driving and want easier parking, starting a round trip from Gohado Station is also a good choice.

Q. Can I climb Yudalsan without hiking boots?

Up to Nojeokbong Peak, Dalseong Park, and Madangbawi, the stone steps and trails are well maintained, so regular sneakers are enough to make the climb.

Q. Do I have to wait in line a long time to buy bread at Korombang Bakery?

A separate takeout-only counter for the cream cheese baguette and shrimp baguette runs quickly, so outside weekend peak hours you can buy them without a long wait.
