1. Gunsan's Old-Downtown Walking Belt of Modern Cultural Heritage, Done With a Single Parking Stop
Gunsan is especially loved by first-timers and car-free travelers because its key sights are so tightly packed. Base yourself around the Modern History Museum by the inner harbor and the Gunsan History Hall of the Japanese Colonial Period, and the main building of the former Gunsan Customs House, Jangmi Gallery, the Modern Architecture Hall and the Modern Art Museum line up side by side within a few flat blocks.
After the museums, walk deeper into the alleys and the route flows naturally to cafés in colonial-era Japanese houses, Chowon Photo Studio and the Japanese-style house in Sinheung-dong. You don't need to keep checking a map app: just follow the signs and 100 years of scenery from the modern port-opening era unfold like a panorama.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip For the exhibition halls around the Modern History Museum, a combined ticket is cheaper than buying individual tickets, and the indoor halls close on Mondays, so plan Monday routes around the outdoor alleys.
2. A Walk to the Bamboo Grove of Dongguksa Temple and Haemanggul Tunnel on Wolmyeongsan
Walk up a gentle slope from the flat alleys of the old downtown toward the foot of Wolmyeongsan and you'll reach Dongguksa Temple, the only Japanese-style temple architecture remaining in Korea. Its steep roof pitch and eave lines, together with the refreshing grove of giant bamboo behind the main hall, make it a good place for calm reflection.
Go a little farther from Dongguksa toward the entrance of Wolmyeong Park and you'll find Haemanggul Tunnel, a semicircular tunnel dug in 1926 to connect the old downtown with the Haemang-dong fish market. Pass through the tunnel, which preserves the traces of modern history intact, and continue onto the Wolmyeongsan trail to experience the old everyday routes of Gunsan's residents firsthand.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip The bamboo grove path inside the Dongguksa grounds photographs most cleanly in the morning, when sunlight slants in, and there are fewer visitors then too.
3. An Iseongdang Bread Pilgrimage and a Finale of Night Views at Eunpa Lake Park's Mulbit Bridge
The crowning touch of the old-downtown walking course is, without a doubt, Iseongdang and the local food. If the line at the main building for red bean bread and vegetable bread is long, a smart alternative is to relax at the bakery café in the new building right next door with cream cheese bread or a milkshake. For meals, we recommend baekban (home-style set meal) and Korean restaurants such as Seou Restaurant around Jungang-ro, or the seafood jjamppong alley.
When the sun starts to sink, take a taxi or drive from the old downtown to Eunpa Lake Park. Night lighting comes on along the 370 m Mulbit Bridge that crosses the lake and a cool evening breeze blows along the waterside decks, making it a perfect night walk for the first night of a 2-day, 1-night trip.

Yeohaenggak editor's tip If you book lodging near Gunsan Station or the express bus terminal (such as Avon Hotel), getting to your train or bus the next morning becomes much more relaxed.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Q. For a Gunsan day trip, what should I cover to see the highlights?
Combine the old-downtown modern history belt (museums, Chowon Photo Studio, Dongguksa Temple, Iseongdang) and Gyeongam-dong Railroad Village, with lunch in between.
Q. Can I reserve Iseongdang's red bean bread and vegetable bread or have them delivered?
Besides buying on site, you can also order parcel delivery, but the crisp texture of warm vegetable bread fresh from the oven is at its best when you eat it right there.
Q. If I go to Gunsan with kids, which sights would be good to add?
Besides the old-downtown course, adding the Geumgang Future Experience Center near the Geumgang Estuary Bank or Jinpo Maritime Theme Park gives you plenty of hands-on activities.
